Five months after Epic Games first confirmed that Fortnite would be coming to Android, the game is finally arriving.
Fortnite for Android is launching in beta this week. It'll be available exclusively for Samsung devices at first, with support for other Android phones coming over the next few days. Owners of Samsung devices will be able to join in immediately by finding Fortnite in the Samsung Game Launcher app. If you'd like to sign up for the beta, go here to sign up for an email invitation.
Here are the Samsung phones that support Fortnite for Android:
And here are the other Android devices that will be able to play Fortnite:
Epic says that these devices are not currently supported, but that they're working on a fix in the near term:
Finally, Epic adds that if your device has Android 5.0 or higher; 3GB of RAM or more; and an Adreno 530 or higher, Mali-G71 MP20, Mali-G72 MP12 or higher, you may be able to run Fortnite on your Android phone.
One other notable detail is that consumers who buy a Samsung Galaxy Note 9 or Galaxy Tab S4 will get a special in-game skin, called Galaxy. You can see it below.
As expected, Fortnite for Android will not be available through the Google Play Store. Users will instead be asked to download a Fortnite Installer to their phone in order to play the game. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has said this is because his company wants to have a "direct relationship" with players and because Epic doesn't want to give Google a 30 percent cut of the game's in-app sales. Not being distributed in the Play Store might be a problem for many other Android apps, but considering how hugely popular Fortnite is, most people probably won't mind having to download an installer to finally get the game on their Android device.
