After some news about the new YouTube Music streaming service came out last night, Google has now officially confirmed the news and shed a bit more light on its plans.
YouTube Music will launch in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, and South Korea on Tuesday, May 22nd. It'll expand to more countries in the coming weeks, with launches planned for Austria, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
Pricing will start at $9.99 per month for an ad-free YouTube Music Premium experience that'll also include support for downloads and listening in the background.
Also available will be YouTube Premium, which will cost $11.99 per month and include all of the benefits of YouTube Music Premium as well as ad-free videos across all of YouTube, background video playback, video downloads, and access to YouTube Originals. So the YouTube Premium membership is basically the new name for the current YouTube Red subscription.
Google says that current Google Play Music subscribers will get YouTube Music Premium as part of their subscription, adding that they'll still have access to their purchased music, uploads, and playlists in Google Play Music.
Also of note is that current YouTube Red subscribers will get to keep their current $9.99 price rather than being forced to upgrade to an $11.99 YouTube Premium subscription.
So there are the details on the new YouTube Music Premium and YouTube Premium subscriptions. There are a lot of changes to process, but the good news is that at least for now, current Google Play Music and YouTube Red subscribers will get to continue enjoying their service with the same experience and pricing t hat they're used to. If you haven't yet signed up for YouTube Red but are interested, you may want to enroll before next Tuesday to lock in that $9.99 price.
