After announcing the Snapdragon 2100 processor for smartwatches back in early 2016, it sounds like Qualcomm is nearly ready to release a new wearable-focused processor.

Pankaj Kedia, Qualcomm's senior director of wearables, has confirmed that Qualcomm will introduce new smartwatch chips later this year. Most of the details of these new chipsets are still unknown, but Kedia did say that the new chips will allow for smaller watches and that they'll offer a "significant" upgrade over the current Wear OS battery life.

Kedia also hinted that Qualcomm will announce its new wearables-focused chipsets alongside a lead smartwatch, adding that several companies will have Wear OS smartwatches with Qualcomm's new chipsets in time for the holidays.

There hasn't been much to get excited about lately with regard to new Wear OS hardware, but it sounds like that'll change in a big way later this year. That's exciting news for anyone interested in a new Android-powered smartwatch, especially given all of the new features that Google has been working to add to Wear OS lately.
