It's been a few months since we heard anything about RED's Hydrogen One smartphone, but that's changing today, and it's not all good news.
The RED Hydrogen One has been delayed from its previous "summer" launch timeframe to August 2018. The phone won't be totally complete then, either, as RED founder Jim Jannard says that the phone will get "more firmware/software updates than any phone ever made" because the company has "no idea whatsoever" what it's doing.
Jannard did have some better news to share, though, saying that RED is adding a two dual camera setups — one front and one back — to let you capture 4V content in real time using the Hydrogen One. Jannard also says that the delay will help RED to launch its phone at the same time across multiple carriers.
RED began taking pre-orders for the Hydrogen One in July 2017, asking $1195 for the aluminum model or $1595 for the titanium. The device was originally expected to ship in Q1 2018, but now it's slated to arrive in August 2018.
Specs for the RED Hydrogen One include a 5.7-inch 2560x1440 display that can switch between 2D, 3D, and holographic 4-View content. It's also got a Snapdragon 835 processor, 4500mAh battery, USB-C, a microSD card slot, dual SIM slots, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
It's disappointing to hear that the RED Hydrogen One has been delayed, but delays can happen with phones that are still being developed, especially when companies new to the mobile space are involved. Here's to hoping that the Hydrogen One doesn't encounter more delays so we can try its holographic display for ourselves in August.
