Yesterday, Apple did what a lot of people were expecting: Announced a brand new variant of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. No changes to specifications or features, but just a different color option. The (PRODUCT)RED iPhone 8 is now officially official, and, as one might expect, there has been plenty of attention paid to the red smartphone.
Just like last year's (PRODUCT)RED iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.
I'm not sure if we're at a trend yet, or a routine, but it looks like we're going to start seeing new iPhone variants launched several months after the phone's initial release. Not that that's a bad thing. It might help spur up sales for a smartphone that already sees millions of units sold every quarter. But we might be at the point where if you want the (PRODUCT)RED option, you'll have to wait a few months after the smartphone's unveiling.
Of course, if you upgrade every year that's not really a big deal. You'll just be upgrading with your own yearly schedule.
For folks who picked up an iPhone 8 at launch, though, there weren't a lot of color options to choose from. And let's be honest here, the (PRODUCT)RED variant really stands out. Especially this year, with Apple going with a black front instead of the white front panels.
I can understand wholeheartedly why someone who got the iPhone 8 at launch might be a little upset with the new color arriving so many months later.
I picked up an iPhone 7 Plus in the red color last year, but I ended up returning it because I wasn't a fan of the white front panels. And I would very much like to go with the (PRODUCT)RED variant again this year, but I'm not switching from the iPhone X to the iPhone 8 Plus. (Been there. Done that, and don't want to go back to having bezels in my life.)
Which is why I think I'm going to echo a lot of the same sentiment I saw on social media over the last day or so: I want a (PRODUCT)RED iPhone X, please. And not just a case, either. A proper red variant of Apple's first smartphone with minimized bezels. Are we going to get one this year? There were rumors that we might, but with the iPhone 8 getting official treatment without the iPhone X, I don't think that's going to happen.
(Would you approve of a Blush Gold iPhone X instead?)
So, I have to ask the obvious question: Would you fork over the money for a (PRODUCT)RED iPhone X if given the chance? While we probably won't get one this year, there's always the possibility of 2019, especially with the iPhone X not being such a brand new product and all. So let me know if a red iPhone X is on your radar at all.
