We're seeing more and more smartphones come to market with a portrait mode that'll help you give your photos a blurry background effect, but for those that don't have the feature, Instagram may be able to help.
Instagram is now rolling out a new feature called Focus that'll blur the background of a photo, helping your subject to stand out. Just open the camera in Instagram and find "Focus" next to "Superzoom". When the camera finds a person, it'll blur the background and leave them in focus and let you add filters or stickers after taking the photo.
Focus is included with version 39.0 of Instagram for iOS and Android. The feature is supported on the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X, as well as select Android phones.
While some smartphones do have a Focus-style feature built in to their camera, not everyone has a device that supports this feature. It's a pretty popular feature in mobile right now, including with users, so it's good to see Instagram making portrait mode accessible for more people. Now we'll have to actually test the feature to see how it compares to the portrait mode that's built in to other devices.
Also of note is that Instagram is rolling out a new @mention sticker on iOS. With it, you can mention another account in your stories and then rotate, scale, and place the sticker wherever you'd lik on your photo or video.
