NVIDIA today announced that it’s launching a lower cost version of the SHIELD TV set-top box.
Starting today, September 21st, NVIDIA is taking pre-orders for its new 16GB SHIELD TV at a price of $179. The big difference between this model and the $199.99 version that launched earlier this year is that the $179 package doesn’t include the gaming controller.
Pre-orders for this $179 SHIELD TV will ship on October 18th.
Other than the missing controller, this appears to be the same SHIELD TV that we’ve had since the start of 2017. It’s powered by a Tegra X1 processor, includes 4K HDR support, and runs Android TV. It also supports streaming games using GeForce Now and the ability to cast games from your GeForce GTX computer to your SHIELD TV using GameStream.
If you’d like a controller, you can purchase one separately for $59.99 or you can still purchase the $199.99 SHIELD TV bundle that includes the set-top box, remote, and controller.
This lower cost SHIELD TV appears to be NVIDIA’s response to the new Apple TV 4K, which also costs $179. Both look like powerful boxes, with the SHIELD TV packing Android TV software and some nice gaming additions, while the Apple TV comes with tvOS and nice 4K HDR perks like your existing movie purchases get upgrade to 4K HDR for free.
