A few years ago, the government began considering allowing cellphone calls in-flight. Unfortunately for folks that’d like to make a few calls while 30,000 feet in the air, that plan is now dead.
FCC Chairman Ajit Pai today released a statement to say that he’s permanently killing those proceedings. “I do not believe that moving forward with this plan is in the public interest,” Pai said.
The FCC Chairman’s full statement is as follows:
“I stand with airline pilots, flight attendants, and America’s flying public against the FCC’s ill-conceived 2013 plan to allow people to make cellphone calls on planes. I do not believe that moving forward with this plan is in the public interest. Taking it off the table permanently will be a victory for Americans across the country who, like me, value a moment of quiet at 30,000 feet.”
Having the ability to make cellphone calls while in the air could be handy for some folks, but it could also get irritating if you’ve got several cellphone calls happening at once in an enclosed airplane. Fortunately for the people that agree that in-flight calls could be irritating, it looks like the FCC won’t be allowing them any time soon.
