Spotify has long offered high-quality 320kbps music streaming, but it looks like the service may soon roll out an even higher quality option.
Some Spotify users have been receiving notifications for a service called Spotify Hi-Fi. The alerts show that Spotify Hi-Fi includes all of the features of the standard Spotify Premium service as well as “Lossless CD quality audio.”
The notification also suggests that Spotify Hi-Fi members will get discounts on limited edition vinyl records as well as one free record.
When it comes to pricing, different Spotify users have been given different prices for Hi-Fi. Some folks say that Spotify Hi-Fi costs an extra $5 per month on top of the $10 monthly Spotify Premium price, while some have gotten a $7.50 price and others have seen a $10 price increase.
Spotify hasn’t made any official announcements about this Hi-Fi service. In a statement to The Verge, Spotify said, “We are always testing new products and offers but have no news to share at this time.”
Spotify appears to be doing some testing for its Hi-Fi service, gauging interest in a higher-quality offering and trialling different prices to see what fits best. As for the service itself, most folks probably won’t be able to tell much of a difference when they’re just plugging their headphones into their smartphone to listen to some tunes.
There are likely some folks out there that have equipment (like a headphone amp) that could take advantage of higher-quality Spotify streams, though, and Spotify could make some extra money from those folks by offering this Hi-Fi service.
