Google has been improving its Project Fi wireless service since its debut in April 2015, adding things like US Cellular support and faster international data. Today Project Fi is getting beefed up again.
Google is adding group plans to Project Fi. With a group plan, you can have up to six people on a single plan, and each person gets all the benefits of Fi.
Pricing for group plans starts at $15 per line for unlimited talk and text (compared to $20 for a single user), and you can add data at a rate of $10 per gigabyte. If you end up using less data than you paid for, Google will credit you for the data that you didn’t use. All members will appear on a single bill, and you can members can be added or removed at any time.
Each member of a group plan can view their own data usage in the Project Fi app, and the group plan’s manager can view the usage for each member. Both members and managers can set data notifications to help keep track of usage, and managers can also set monthly data allowances per member and pause data service if necessary.
Project Fi group plans are launching today. To celebrate, Google is offering $100 off the Nexus 6P and $150 off the Nexus 5X when you activate through Project Fi.
The major US carriers have long offered family plans, giving you an easy way to get service with your loved ones, often for a bit less than they'd pay on their own. That's why it's good to see Project Fi finally get family plans of its own, making it easier for a group of people to be on Google’s service. For example, now a family can all be on Fi, and a parent can easily manage their kids’ data usage. Plus, Project Fi group plan customers can get a slight discount on talk and text compared to single customers, too.
