As we inch closer to October 4 and the official reveal of the new Google Pixel phones, details on the devices continue to trickle out.
Google’s Pixel and Pixel XL will be launch with an IP53 rating for dust and water resistance, says Android Police. To compare, the Apple’s iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are IP67 rated, while Samsung’s Galaxy S7 and S7 edge carry an IP68 rating.
With an IP53 rating, expect the Pixel and Pixel XL should be able to withstand “water falling as a spray at any angle up to 60 degrees from the vertical.” So if you’re holding it in your hand, it should be ok in the rain or with a light splash of liquid. Don’t try to dunk a Pixel in water or anything like you would a GS7 or iPhone 7, though, because it doesn’t have that kind of protection.
When it comes to dust, Google’s Pixel phones should be able to prevent dust from entering in any quantity where it could cause damage to their internals.
With flagships from Samsung and Apple offering a higher form of water resistance than your typical smartphone, some folks may be hoping that we’ll see something similar from Google and its new Pixel phones. Today’s report says that we won’t, though, which is kind of a disappointment since these having water resistance like the GS7 or iPhone 7 can really give you peace of mind.
