If you’ve got a Samsung Galaxy S5 or Galaxy S5 Active on AT&T, your weekend is about to get a lot better.
AT&T announced today that it’s now pushing Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow updates to its Galaxy S5 and Galaxy S5 Active. With updates to Marshmallow come new features like Google Now on Tap, improved permissions, and Doze mode battery optimizations.
In addition to the bump to Android 6.0.1, both the GS5 and GS5 Active are receiving support for AT&T Wi-Fi Calling and Video Calling. Wi-Fi Calling enables you to talk and text over Wi-Fi, which could come in handy if you’re in a place with weak cellular reception. Meanwhile, AT&T Video Calling offers built-in video calling functionality so that you don’t have to download any extra apps to conduct a video call.
Finally, AT&T says that its GS5 and GS5 Active updates add “Android device security enhancements.”
These updates are both rather large, with the Galaxy S5’s update coming in at 938-955MB and the Galaxy S5 Active’s update weighing it at 906-907MB. As a result, you’ll need to be connected to Wi-Fi before attempting to download your phone’s update.
Once you’re connected to Wi-Fi, you can check for your phone’s update by going into Settings, scrolling to the System category, tapping About Device, Software Update, and then Check for Updates.
The Galaxy S5 and Galaxy S5 Active aren’t exactly the newest Android phones on the block, but they were both flagships at one time, and there are likely still a lot of people out there still using them today. That’s why it’s good to see them getting an update to Marshmallow, even if these updates did take a while to roll out.
