In recent years, Verizon has been making moves to try get those customers still on its grandfathered unlimited data plan onto a newer plan. Those efforts have included a $20 per month price hike and a Network Optimization program, and now it’s been revealed that Verizon’s got something else up their sleeve.
A new report claims that Verizon could soon disconnect the lines of unlimited data users that consume an “extraordinary amount” of data each month. According to Droid-Life, this change will go into effect on August 31.
It’s expected that starting tomorrow, July 21, Verizon will start contacting those unlimited customers that use an “extraordinary amount” of data. VZW will tell the out-of-contract customers that if they don’t move to The Verizon Plan by August 31, they’ll have their line shut down. If that happens, the customer will have 50 days to reactivate, but only if they sign up for a Verizon Plan.
One detail that’s still unclear is exactly how much data usage Verizon considers to be “extraordinary.” Verizon has confirmed that they’ll begin contacting a “small group” of customers with “extraordinary” data usage to tell them that they need to switch to a new plan by August 31.
It’s no surprise that Verizon is planning to move heavy unlimited data users to a tiered plan. As I said before, it certainly appears as though Verizon wants to move its grandfathered unlimited data customers off of unlimited, and this is another way to get some more folks off that plan. There are likely some Verizon customers with an unlimited data plan that consume huge amounts of data each month, and it looks like they’ll soon have to find themselves another rate plan.
Do any of you still have an unlimited data plan on Verizon?
