Earlier this month, Samsung announced some new UFS memory cards that are considerably faster than the microSD cards that many of us have in our smartphones right now. Unfortunately, existing phones with microSD slots don’t support these UFS cards, but Samsung is working on new slots that support both formats.
Samsung has revealed that it’s working on a memory card slot design that supports both UFS and microSD cards. It’s unclear when we’ll actually begin to see these sockets appear in consumer devices, but Samsung does say that they’re working with different partners on integrating the new design in next-gen devices.
Samsung’s full statement to Droid-Life is as follows:
“The new UFS cards are not compatible with the current microSD card socket. However, we have developed a socket design that can support both UFS cards and microSD cards. We are working with different partners in the industry on this integration for next-generation devices.”
It’s no surprise that Samsung is working on UFS slots for future devices, as they probably want to actually sell their shiny new memory cards. But while UFS may be the new hotness, microSD won’t be going anywhere any time soon, and a lot of folks already have a microSD card or two. It's good that Samsung new socket design will support both formats, meaning that any device you buy that includes that design will support both your existing microSD card as well as any super-fast UFS card that you may buy in the future.
