Just one day after our own Evan Selleck asked Apple for a Dark Mode in iOS, it’s been discovered that Apple may be granting his wish.
Developer Andrew Wiik has found that Apple appears to have included a Dark Mode for iOS in the first iOS 10 beta release. He shared screenshots of the feature running in Xcode, showing Apple’s Messages app with a black background. Mac Aficionados responded with a few screenshots of their own, showing the iBooks, Clock, Safari, and iTunes Store apps all running in Dark Mode, too.
Another image shared by Wiik shows a Dark Mode-style pop-up with a normal background, suggesting that this Dark Mode feature still needs some work.
At its WWDC keynote earlier this week, Apple announced a new Dark Mode for tvOS that would turn the background black, making it easier on the eyes when you’re watching TV in the dark. There was no announcement of a Dark Mode for iOS, but it’s possible that Apple is planning on rolling such a feature out with the full iOS 10 launch or possibly in a later iOS 10.x update. The company has made changes to iOS updates during beta testing in the past, and so it’s possible that we’ll see this Dark Mode officially announced later on when it’s a bit more stable and polished.
