Bluetooth is becoming more and more widely used in mobile thanks to things like the rise in smartwatch wearers. And soon, a major Bluetooth update will debut.
The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) says that it will soon announce Bluetooth 5, a major upgrade over Bluetooth 4.2. Bluetooth 5 will double the speed and quadruple the range of the current Bluetooth iteration, which will ensure that connections between two Bluetooth-connected devices will reach farther and that information shared between them will be moved faster.
Additionally, Bluetooth 5 will work better for beacon devices that provide location-relevant info and navigation, like Google’s new Nearby offering.
Considering how devices and services are increasingly using Bluetooth, like Internet of Things hardware, smartwatches, beacons, and more, it’s exciting to hear that Bluetooth 5 will offer longer range and faster connections. Of course, you’ll have to have the hardware that supports Bluetooth 5 to take advantage of that increased performance.
Bluetooth 5 will be officially announced at an event in London on June 16. Here’s to hoping that Bluetooth 5 devices arrive sooner rather than later.
