Google has always had a hand in making Nexus hardware, collaborating with hardware companies like HTC, Samsung, LG, and Huawei. According to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, though, Google will soon exert a bit more control in those designs.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai said today that Google plans to “be more opinionated about the design of the phones.” Pichai was talking about Nexus devices at the Code Conference today, and he explained that Google will exert more control when it feels the need to “push the devices forward.”

The same additional control could be added to software, too. Pichai added that we’ll see Google “hopefully add more features on top of Android on Nexus phones” and that “there’s a lot of software innovation to be had.”

Google is no stranger to trying new technologies with the public, with Google Glass being one example of at the company trying something few others are. Pichai’s statement makes it sound like Google is interested in trying out new technologies on its Nexus devices, too. It’s not often that we see all-new smartphone features, but Google wants to change that, and it’ll be interesting to see what they come up with.

One other detail worth noting is that Pichai stressed that Google does not plan on making its own phones. “Our plan is still to work with OEMs to make phones,” the Google CEO said, so it sounds like the Nexus devices are closest things we’ll get to a “Google Phone.”
