Samsung’s been in the virtual reality game for a while now with the Gear VR, and now the company appears to be stepping its VR efforts up.
Samsung showed off a “high resolution for VR” display at the Display Week conference that is 5.5 inches in size and has a resolution of 3840x2160. To compare, the Galaxy S7 edge has a 5.5-inch display 2560x1440 display, so the high-res VR screen is definitely high-res.
The Samsung rep at this booth described the display as a prototype, and the company hasn’t announced when or if it’ll appear in consumer hardware. However, there’s speculation that it could be used in this year’s Galaxy Note. The Note phones are part of Samsung’s flagship lineup, and they regularly include high-end specs and new features. If Samsung bumps up this high-res VR screen a bit, likely to the 5.7-inch size that the Note lineup is known for, then the next Galaxy Note could be a big deal for smartphones and for VR.
