Late last year, Walmart announced its new mobile payment service named Walmart Pay and began testing it in select stores. Now the service is starting a wider rollout.
Walmart Pay is now available in Arkansas and Texas, with around 600 stores rolling out the payment service. In order to use Walmart Pay, shoppers must install the Walmart app on their Android or iOS device and launch the app once you’re at the checkout lane. You then use your phone’s camera to scan a QR code that’s displayed on the register and pay on your phone using any major credit, debit, prepaid, or Walmart gift card.
There are already a few mobile payment solutions on the market from Apple, Google, and Samsung, but Walmart has decided to ignore those services and launch its own mobile payment service. With today’s Walmart Pay expansion, it seems as though Walmart is happy with how its payment service is working so far, which suggests that it may not be planning to support Apple Pay, Android Pay, or Samsung Pay any time soon.
If you live in Arkansas or Texas, will you be giving Walmart Pay a try?
