We’ve seen some Android devices come to market with a pressure-sensitive touch feature similar to Apple’s 3D Touch, but so far Google hasn’t baked anything like that straight into Android. It was rumored that that would change with the launch of Android N, but apparently that won’t be the case.
A report from Recode claims that Google will not include a pressure-sensitive touch feature in initial release of Android N. The good news is that it may come in a later version of Android N as part of a maintenance release.
Pressure-sensitive touch can enable developers to add new features to their applications without making the app’s UI more complicated. They can also be used to more quickly jump into a certain part of the app, like with Apple’s App Store app that includes a 3D Touch shortcut that’ll let you go directly to the search. It’ll be interesting to see what Google’s version of 3D Touch looks like, so hopefully the feature will indeed be baked into an Android N maintenance update so that we can see what Google’s implementation looks like and so more Android phones can come to market with pressure-sensitive touch in tow.
Would you use a 3D Touch-style feature on your Android device if it were supported?
