Fingerprint readers are big in mobile right now, with many flagships and even some mid-range models offering the feature. Having a fingerprint reader typically means that you’ve got a button or some other distinct shape on a device, but with a new technology from LG, that will no longer be necessary.
LG today announced a new fingerprint sensor module that can sit beneath glass. That means that a device won’t need a button or other protrusion in order for it to have a fingerprint reader. With LG’s new tech, a device will have a 0.01 inch-thick (0.3mm) groove on the backside of the glass where the fingerprint sensor will be placed.
LG touts that, in addition to being easy to hide, its new fingerprint reader is also very accurate. According to LG, its new fingerprint sensor module has a false acceptance rate of 0.002 percent.
LG isn’t saying when we could start to see its new fingerprint reader tech in devices. It could be a big deal for future smartphones, though, as it’ll all for a cleaner design since manufacturers won’t have to worry about working in a button or cutout for a fingerprint reader on their design. It’ll be useful in making waterproof hardware, too, since device makers won’t need to worry about preventing external elements from getting past a button or cutout.
