Oppo today took the wraps off of its two latest Android smartphones, the R9 and R9 Plus. While the spec lists of the two phones differ a bit, they do have one thing in common: beefy front-facing cameras.
Both the R9 and R9 Plus come with 16-megapixel front-facing cameras for all of your selfie needs. Of course, they also include a beautification mode for those selfies, as well as a panorama selfie option. Around back, the R9 Plus boasts a 16-megapixel camera, while the R9 has a 13-megapixel shooter.
Another notable difference between the two phones is screen size. As you might’ve guessed, the R9 Plus is the larger of the two, packing a 6-inch 1920x1080 display with super-thin 1.76mm size bezels. The R9 display measures 5.5 inches and has a resolution of 1920x1080 plus even thinner size bezels that measure 1.66mm thick.
Diving inside the two phones, the R9 Plus is powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 652 processor and 4GB of RAM, and it includes either 64GB or 128GB of storage. Meanwhile, the R9 has an octa-core MediaTek Helio P10 processor at its core along with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The R9 Plus boasts a 4120mAh battery and the R9 has a 2850mAh battery, and both include VOOC fast charging that promises to give you two hours of talk time in five minutes of charging.
Rounding out the feature sets of the R9 and R9 Plus are fingerprint readers, dual SIM slots, and metal bodies. Finally, both the R9 and R9 Plus run Android 5.1 Lollipop beneath Oppo’s custom ColorOS 3.0, which Oppo says is faster than its previous ColorOS 2.1 interface. For example, ColorOS 3.0 is said to boost 25 percent faster than ColorOS 2.1.
The Oppo R9 will launch in China on March 24 for 2799 yuan ($431 USD), while the R9 Plus will hit stores on April 12 for 3299 yuan ($508 USD). While the two phones may seem aimed at selfie addicts with their 16-megapixel front-facing cameras, the rest of their feature sets are pretty respectable, too, boasting 4GB of RAM and lots of storage. The metal bodies and super-thin side bezels help to give the R9 and R9 Plus a premium look, as well. Unfortunately, Oppo hasn’t said if or when these phones will be sold outside of China.
