Two years after Samsung launched its Milk Music streaming service, a new report claims that Milk Music may soon be shut down.
Sources speaking to Variety say that Milk Music hasn’t gotten Samsung the kind of returns that it wanted, and so Samsung is looking to “clean house” after dropping quite a bit of money on it. Another source says that while the free tier of Milk Music does have some users, very few people pay for the premium version, which costs $3.99 per month and includes features like unlimited song skips and ad-free listening.
As for what might be next, rumors have suggested that Samsung might be interested in buying Tidal, the on-demand music streaming service owned by Jay-Z. However, a Samsung spokesperson has told Variety that “the rumor of Samsung acquiring Tidal is not true.”
With competition like Spotify, Pandora, Slacker, and Apple Music, the streaming music competition is tough. Plus, the Milk Music app for Android is only available on Samsung devices, making it even more difficult for the service to gain traction. As a result, it comes as no surprise to hear that Samsung may soon shutter Milk Music. It’s also worth noting that Samsung shut down its Milk Video service in November 2015, so if it does indeed shut down Milk Music in the new future, it’ll be the second Milk service to be killed off in around six months.
