If you’re a tech fan like me, I’m sure you’ll install plenty of apps each week. But what if you could get paid for downloading and trying out apps and games? That’s what Showbox wants to enable.

Showbox is an Android app that incentivizes app downloads by rewarding users with “Cash-Points” that can be converted into real dollars.

The way Showbox works is fairly simple. Once you’ve set up an account, you are presented with a list of app offers. These will link to apps for you to download and install and provide you with instructions of how to gain the points on offer. For some apps, you are simply required to install and open the app, while others require a bit more investment — like clocking a few minutes’ use or for you to reach a certain level in a game. Once you’ve met the offer criteria, your account will be credited with the Cash-Points.

It’s easy enough to navigate the list and choose offers that appeal to you. The offers also change daily. Other ways to gain points include verifying your email account or making purchases or starting service trials through partner websites.

The amount of points on offer varies greatly. Some pledge double digit amounts with others offering up multiple thousand points. Obviously, the ones offering the most points require more from the user and you’ll find that most of these require at least three minutes of usage or for you to make some kind of in-app purchase. For the most part, it is still simple to earn the points, but you can decide up front if you think the investment will be worth the reward.

Showbox provides you with a notification when points have been added to your account — this is usually immediate or within a few minutes of completion from my experience. Tracking works well for the most part, but a few games I played to a certain level (as required) failed to track meaning I lost the minutes I had put into those apps on occasion.

You can cash out your points to your PayPal account each week at a ratio of 1400:1 for points:dollars. Because of this ratio, don’t expect to get rich quick using the app. Showbox states committed users can earn around $25 each week but from my experience you’d need to be completing numerous offers per day and plunging much time into the downloaded apps to get anywhere near this amount in a week. A more realistic expectation may be a few bucks per week. On the plus side, the threshold required to withdraw your funds is just $2 so you don’t have to spend months waiting to meet a minimum requirement.

As well as PayPal payments, you can also opt to have your points paid out as mobile phone credit, in Amazon or Netflix credit (U.S. only), or as a charitable donation. It would be nice to see Showbox add even more partners for this, especially internationally.

In the points menu, you can see how many points you earned today and in total, and this is broken down by offer provider. You can’t, however, see exactly which offers have tracked which makes submitting a report for missing points (while possible) a little difficult. The interface of Showbox in general is easy enough to understand and navigate, but design-wise it could do with a refresh as it look a little dated.

Showbox is an easy way to make a few dollars from downloading and using apps. While it won’t make you a millionaire, you can at least get a little kickback from trying out some new apps each week — especially great if you’re an app addict anyway.
