Way back in October 2014, Motorola announced its Android 5.0 update plans, and the company said that its DROID Ultra, Maxx, and Mini would all get a taste of Lollipop. Unfortunately for owners of those devices, that update is never coming.
Motorola’s David Schuster revealed today that the DROID Ultra, Maxx, and Mini will not be updated to Android Lollipop. Schuster didn’t explain why the updates won’t be delivered, saying only that Motorola is “very sorry” that the updates won’t be coming.
In order to make up for the lack of Lollipop updates for those three DROIDs, Motorola is offering discounts on the DROID Turbo 2 and DROID Maxx 2. With this special pricing, the DROID Turbo 2 can be had for $524 ($100 off) and the DROID Maxx 2 is $334 ($50 off). In order to qualify for the special pricing, you’ll need a DROID Ultra, Maxx, or Mini with an active phone number. The offer expires on May 19, and you’ll need to redeem your discount code by June 2.
This news is a pretty disappointing for DROID Ultra, Maxx, and Mini owners. They’ve been waiting for their Lollipop updates for a while now, and while some have suspected that the updates weren’t coming because of Motorola’s lengthy silence on the topic, it’s still a bummer to hear the news that they definitely won’t be getting Lollipop. With the age of the phones and Lenovo’s recent purchase of Motorola, perhaps it was just decided that the effort couldn’t be put into updating those devices.
