UPDATE: Motorola has reached out to clarify that when saying that all new phones will have fingerprint readers, Xudong was referring to new products for China. Motorola's full statement:
"Xudong was referring to products specific to the China market. We’ll share more information about our 2016 products at a later time."
After recently revealing that future Moto phones will feature Lenovo branding, Motorola’s parent company has dropped some more tidbits about upcoming Moto hardware.
Lenovo SVP Chen Xudong has teased that the 2016 Moto phones will all have displays that are a minimum of 5 inches in size. Last year’s Moto X Style/Pure Edition and Moto G had 5.7-inch and 5-inch displays, respectively, leaving the Moto E and its 4.5-inch screen as the only sub-5-inch model. It sounds like that’ll change in 2016, though, and so it’ll be interesting to see how Lenovo sizes its next three Moto phones. Perhaps the Moto G will move to around 5.2 inches so that the Moto E can be bumped to 5 inches?
In addition to having 5-inch displays or larger, Lenovo’s Chen Xudong has revealed that all of the new Moto phones will include fingerprint readers. Native fingerprint reader support is one of Android 6.0’s major new features, and it’s one of the more popular upgrades in recent Android smartphones, and so it makes sense that Lenovo would begin including them in Moto phones. Does this mean that even the entry-level Moto E will get a fingerprint reader? While fingerprint readers are pretty popular on Android phones nowadays, we don’t often see them at the entry-level, so a new Moto E with a fingerprint reader could be attractive to folks in the market for an affordable device.
