With Samsung expectedly to reveal the Galaxy S7 in the next couple of months, reports claiming to have details on the new device and its Galaxy S7 edge sibling are starting to increase in number. Today another such report has surfaced.
Evan Blass, also known as @evleaks, today tipped several details of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge. According to Blass’s source, the regular S7 will have a 5.1-inch display, while the S7 edge will have a 5.5-inch screen. That’s a tad different from last year’s models, which both have 5.1-inch displays. While the S7 and S7 edge may have different screen sizes, it’s said that they’ll both have 2560x1440 resolutions, Super AMOLED display tech, and an always-on display feature that’ll show glanceable alerts.
Inside of Samsung’s new Android flagships will allegedly be larger batteries, but unfortunately for folks that love removable batteries, the GS7 and GS7 edge will use embedded batteries like their predecessors. The Galaxy S7 will allegedly have a 3000mAh battery, up from the GS6’s 2550mAh battery. The Galaxy S7 edge is expected to carry a 3600mAh battery, up from the GS6 edge’s 2600mAh juice pack.
Also said to be included with the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge are now octa-core Exynos 8 Octa 8890 processors, though it’s possible that some versions (including those released in North America) could come with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 chip instead. Along with an updated processor will be 4GB of RAM, 32/64GB storage options, and microSD slots, a 12-megapixel camera with f/1.7 aperture that’s flush with the back of the phone, and a 5-megapixel front camera. All of those goodies will reportedly be packed into bodies that’ll be IP67 resistant to dust and water.
The GS7 and GS7 edge are expected to debut in mid to late February, before MWC kicks off on February 22, with a launch rumored for March. Color options will reportedly include black, white, and gold.
The Galaxy S6 is considered by many to be one of Samsung’s best-looking Galaxy phones yet. While previous Galaxy S flagships were mostly plastic, the GS6 was all glass and metal. Unfortunately, that design change brought with it the removal of user-swappable batteries and microSD slots, two features that many Android users love. With the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, Samsung is expected to combine the design of the GS6 with the return of the microSD slot, which should please lots of people. The removable batteries may not be coming back, but the inclusion of larger batteries should help to combat battery life concerns. The inclusion of water and dust resistance will be big for the phones, too, and all of this combined could get people that passed over the GS6 to give the GS7 a chance.
