There’s no question that HTC has been facing some tough times lately, with devices like the flagship One M9 failing to capture any meaningful market share. HTC’s struggles recently led Reuters columnist Robyn Mak to say that HTC might face extinction in 2016, and now HTC CEO Cher Wang has responded to that claim.
Speaking to the press, Cher Wang said the HTC will never disappear. She explained that the global smartphone market will likely continue to grow as technology evolves and that she has faith that there’s still room for further development. Wang also said that HTC has taken the lead over its competitors, both in terms of smartphone development but also virtual reality, where HTC is gaining buzz with its Vive headset.
HTC added its own official response to Mak’s article, saying that it’s prepared to take on the global smartphone market with more flagship devices in targeted markets. The company also said that 2016 will be an exciting year for HTC.
It’s no surprise to see HTC saying that it’s still got a fighting chance in the mobile market. After all, it’s not like Cher Wang would come out and say, “Yep, we’re doomed.” Whether or not HTC actually will stick around remains to be seen, but 2016 will be an indicator of HTC’s survivability. We’ll likely see a new flagship smartphone around March or April, the HTC Vive VR headset will finally see a consumer launch in April, and it’s also expected that we’ll see smart bracelets from HTC and Under Armour in Q1 2016.
