Whenever there’s a new version of Android coming, there’s about as much excitement around its name as there as about what features it includes. Now that Android 6.0 Marshmallow is here, folks are starting to wonder what the next version — the one that’ll start with “N” — will be. Google CEO Sundar Pichai has teased that that could be up to us.
During a Q&A session at University of Delhi in India, Pichai was asked why there aren’t any Android versions that are named after Indian treats. In response, he joked that he’d ask his mom for suggestions, then he went on to suggest that Google could hold an online poll for naming suggestions for Android N.
“Maybe what I’ll do next time is, when we’re working on the next release of Android, Android N, maybe we’ll do an online poll on what the name should be. And if all Indians vote, I think we can make it happen.”
Typically Google keeps each new Android dessert a secret until it’s ready to make the official announcement. For example, both Android Lollipop and Marshmallow were “Android L” and “Android M” before Google was ready to reveal what those desserts were. Because of this secrecy, it’d be kind of crazy if Google were to let the public vote on which dessert would represent Android N. It’d also be pretty interesting to see which dessert would be chosen. If the polling was opened to everyone around the globe, maybe we’d end up with Android Neyyappam or another international dessert.
