Google Play Music is about to become much more attractive as a music subscription service. Google said today that it’s finally launching a family plan for Play Music after announcing the plan back in September. A Google Play Music family plan costs $14.99 per month and includes unlimited music streaming for up to 6 family members, including yourself.
With a Google Play Music family sub, each member of the family will get their own ad-free access to Google Play Music’s catalog of 35 million tracks, and they can stream simultaneously. Additionally, recommendations are exclusive to each user, so you won’t see tracks that are intended for your mom. Each member also gets access to YouTube Red in the US, which offers ad-free YouTube videos as well as the ability to play videos in the background and save them for offline viewing.
Google says that Play Music family subscriptions will be available on Android devices “in the coming days”. You’ll be able to sign up in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, France, and Germany, with support for more countries coming soon.
Apple Music and Spotify both offer family subscriptions, so it’s necessary for Google to offer a family plan as well if it wants to stay competitive in the streaming music battle. What makes Google’s family sub interesting is that each member also gets ad-free videos with YouTube Red, which is a feature that neither Apple nor Spotify can boast.
