Back in March, Apple held an event at which it gave us a closer look at the Apple Watch an spilled the device’s launch and pricing info. Now a report suggests that Apple is planning an Apple Watch 2 event for March 2016.
Sources tell 9to5Mac that Apple is currently aiming to hold an event in March 2016 to reveal the Apple Watch 2 (or whatever it’ll be called). The second Apple Watch is expected to ship in April, one year after pre-orders for the original Apple Watch went live.
Details on the Apple Watch 2 are light, but past rumors have suggested that Apple could include a front-facing camera for FaceTime calls as well as a better Wi-Fi chip that’ll let the smartwatch do more without a connected iPhone. This would allegedly include “basic communication.” However, it’s unclear which new features will actually make it into the consumer version of the Apple Watch 2.
Apple is a company that likes to stick to an annual release schedule, refreshing its mobile products once per year on a pretty regular schedule. The iPhone has long held to an annual release schedule, most iPad models are updated every year, and so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Apple Watch follow a similar schedule, at least initially. Perhaps Apple would end up spacing future upgrades apart if people decide that they don’t want to or don’t need to upgrade their smartwatch every year.
Today’s report also claims that the iPhone 6c could debut at this March event. The iPhone 6c is the rumored name of the new 4-inch iPhone that’s allegedly in the works with an A9 chip — the same in the iPhone 6s — and support for Apple Pay, but also older camera hardware.
