Following Verizon’s decision to raise the cost of its grandfathered unlimited data plan, AT&T has confirmed that it will do the same.
AT&T has told CNET that it will bump up the price of its grandfathered unlimited data plan in February. Fortunately for AT&T customers, the price increase will only be $5 per month, which is considerably lower than the $20 price hike that Verizon unlimited data plan customers are being hit with. That means that when this price increase goes into effect, AT&T unlimited data customers will pay $35 per month for their bottomless bucket of bytes.
"To help ensure we can continue to provide the best service for all of our customers, a small price increase is being made at this time,” AT&T said when confirming the news of its unlimited data plan price increase.
The news that AT&T will increase the price of its unlimited data plan doesn’t come as much of a surprise. AT&T and Verizon often echo one another when it comes to plan and pricing changes, and AT&T would probably prefer that any customers still on an unlimited data plan move to a metered data plan. That said, the folks that are still on a grandfathered data plan that was discontinued years ago probably won’t give it up easily, and I doubt that a $5 monthly price hike will cause the majority of those unlimited data customers to give up their plan.
