When HTC announced the One A9, it promised that the phone would get Android OS updates within 15 days of Google pushing them to Nexus devices. Now HTC has made a similar promise regarding security updates.
HTC says that it will release mostly security patches to unlocked One A9 units in the US “within 15 business days of Google’s first push to Nexus.” The November security update is expected to receive Technical Acceptance today and will be released “immediately thereafter.”
It’s worth noting that this monthly security update commitment only applies to unlocked HTC One A9 units in the US. That means that carrier-branded and unlocked European models aren’t included.
HTC Americas President Jason Mackenzie recently described monthly Android security updates as “not realistic,” so it’s nice to see HTC come around and commit to monthly security patches for the One A9. The downside is that these security updates are limited to unlocked One A9 units in the US, which means that other phones will have to wait for their fixes. That’s a disappointment, but I suppose committing to monthly security patches for one phone is better than none at all.
