Yesterday, Apple launched a new iPad. It’s called the iPad Pro, and it’s a huge tablet measuring in at 12.9 inches. It’s not as big as the biggest tablet out there in the wild, but it’s still pretty impressive. And while it’s big display is certainly one of the selling points, Apple’s shoved plenty of specs into their newest iPad family member to make it worthwhile for any iOS user out there that wants a bigger tablet.
That includes plenty of people who fall under the “creative type” banner, be it writers, artists, designers, or whoever else might want a big canvas to help them create something. Apple has their own Smart Keyboard to help with the folks who want to put words on the iPad Pro’s display, and the Apple Pencil is already getting great reviews as a ridiculously good accessory for those that need that precision for their artwork.
The iPad Pro has a lot going for it, so I’m not at all surprised that there are folks out there that want to pick one up.
In fact, up until just recently, I was one of them.
However, this morning, I’m not so gung-ho about it. Yesterday, I was getting more and more excited for Friday to get here so I could finally walk into a store and pick one up (hopefully, as long as stock was available). Now that Friday is right around the corner, though, I can’t help but think that maybe I’ll wait a bit longer.
Actually, quite a bit longer. Because the more I look at the iPad Pro, the Smart Keyboard, the Apple Pencil, and the three-pin connector on the Pro’s side, I realize that a lot of these things are probably coming to the iPad Air 3, whenever Apple gets around to announcing that.
Earlier this year, when there was still speculation regarding the arrival of the iPad Pro, many believed Apple would unveil the iPad mini 4 and the iPad Air 3, but we obviously know now that’s not how it went down. Instead, Apple debuted the latest iPad mini and the iPad Pro, leaving the iPad Air family to wait a bit longer before it got a new addition to the lineage.
Which suggests to some, including me, that Apple is more than likely tuning the next iPad Air to feature that three-pin connector for smarter accessories just like the iPad Pro, and, maybe, even offer support for the Apple Pencil.
It’s certainly possible that Apple could keep these things, which obviously work so well for the larger iPad Pro, as accessories for the iPad Pro. After all, both are selling points for the Pro – even as I admit that the Pencil is probably more so than the Smart Keyboard. Still, these are things that help sell the iPad Pro.
The three-pin connector and Pencil are also great, though, and I can’t help but hope that Apple brings them to the next iPad Air. Which is why I’m sitting here and genuinely considering waiting to see what happens with that tablet. My urge to early adopt the iPad Pro is strong, though, so we’ll just have to see how it turns out.
