We’re starting to see more and more devices come to market with USB Type-C support, including Google’s new Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. We’re also starting to see a lot of USB Type-C cables flood the market, and with this new connector, it can be tough to determine which cables are good and which aren’t. Google to the rescue!
Google employee Benson Leung has started reviewing USB Type-C cables on Amazon in an effort to protect consumers from bad cables that could potentially harm their devices, and also to help folks find quality cables. So far, Leung has reviewed 7 USB Type-C cables or adapters, and only 2 have gotten 5 stars out of 5. The other 5 have only been rated 2 stars.
Google is starting to get behind USB Type-C in a big way, equipping its newest hardware with Type-C ports and baking support for those ports into Android 6.0 Marshmallow. USB Type-C has a lot of benefits, including higher power output, faster speeds, and a reversible design. Unfortunately, Leung says that some companies making USB Type-C cables “blatantly flaunt the specification” of Type-C, describing what some of them are doing as “downright dangerous.”
