T-Mobile’s Un-carrier X is coming next week, but apparently the company couldn’t wait until then to make some headlines.
T-Mobile today amped up Un-carrier 7.0, which launched last year as Wi-Fi Unleashed and included the debut of the Personal Cellspot, a router that also boosted T-Mo’s cellular signal inside your home. Now T-Mo is unleashing the 4G LTE CellSpot, a new device that the company is touting as a “mini-tower” because it uses your home Internet connection to create a new LTE cell signal in your home.
The 4G LTE CellSpot is plug-and-play, so you just need to hook it up to power and Internet, and it works wherever T-Mobile has spectrum. The unit works with any band 2 UMTS or band 4 LTE device and supports up to 16 simultaneous voice calls. Any T-Mobile customer can use the 4G LTE CellSpot without any logging any. The unit supports T-Mo features like VoLTE, HD Voice, video calling, and Advanced Messaging.
T-Mobile’s new 4G LTE CellSpot launches on November 4 and is available to any postpaid Simple Choice customer for free with a $25 refundable deposit. T-Mo will give one to each business or home.
The unit itself measures 8.5 inches tall, 8.5 inches wide, and 1.3 inches thick. It supports any 3G, 4G, or 4G LTE phone that’s compatible with T-Mobile’s network, including ones that don’t include Wi-Fi calling support.
When compared to last year’s Personal CellSpot, this new 4G LTE CellSpot actually creates a new signal using your home Internet connection, whereas the previous model boosted an existing signal. The 4G LTE CellSpot also offers call handoffs from its service to T-Mo’s network. However, the 4G LTE CellSpot does not double as a Wi-Fi router like the Personal CellSpot does.
