Instagram is expanding its family of apps — which includes the core Instagram app as well as Hyperlapse and Layout — when a new video-focused application.
Boomerang is a new app for Android and iOS that’ll help you to create short, GIF-like videos. When you hit the capture button, Boomerang will capture 10 photos, stitch them together, speed up the video, and smooth out any bumps that might be present. The end result is a 1-second video that plays forward and backward. The app supports capture using both the front and rear cameras on your device.
Once you’ve captured a video, you can quickly share it to Facebook or Instagram. You can also save it to your device’s camera roll. It’s also worth noting that the Boomerang app doesn’t have a feed of its own or anything like that, and you don’t need to sign in to your Instagram account or anything else to use Boomerang. Just launch the app and you’re ready to go.
Boomerang has a nice design that’s simple and easy-to-use, and the fact that the app launches directly to your camera should help you to quickly capture a spontaneous event or action. Whether or not it will catch on remains to be seen, but the popularity of Snapchat and Vine shows that folks are into short videos. If Instagram pushes Boomerang to its user base of more than 400 million, the new app could have a chance.
