It’s not every day that we see a new, rugged smartphone debut, but today AT&T announced a tough Android handset with a huge display.
The Kyocera DuraForce XD runs Android on a 5.7-inch HD display. That large screen features Glove and Wet Touchscreen Operation, meaning that you can still interact with the display while you’re wearing gloves or if the screen gets wet.
The DuraForce XD’s ruggedized body meets IP68 and Military Standard 810G specifications. That means that it can withstand dust, submersion in up 6 feet of water for up to 30 minutes, drops, shock, vibration, extreme temperatures, low pressure, high altitude, solar radiation, salt fog, humidity, and blowing rain. Yeah, the DuraForce XD can stand up to some crazy weather.
Like other rugged phones that we’ve seen in the past, the DuraForce XD features push-to-talk support to help you quickly communicate with co-workers. Specifically, it’s got AT&T Enhanced Push-to-Talk that works over Wi-Fi and LTE.
Other features of the DuraForce XD include dual speakers with a max volume of 110dB and a removable 3700mAh battery.
With its thick, rugged body that eschews design for a body that can stand up to most anything you throw at it (or you throw it at), the Kyocera DuraForce XD isn’t a phone for everyone. If you need a phone that can stand up to your workforce or just a ruggedized handset that can stand up to your clumsiness, the DuraForce XD could be worth a look.
AT&T hasn’t announced when the DuraForce XD will launch or how much it’ll cost.
