UPDATE: Looking over that list below, you might've noticed that only the 2014 Moto X Pure Edition is listed. That's not an error: Motorola Forums Manager Matt says that the AT&T and Verizon versions of the device won't be getting Android 6.0.
Just days after Google announced that Android 6.0 Marshmallow updates will begin rolling out to Nexus devices next week, Motorola has come forward with its own Android 6.0 update plans.
Motorola today revealed several devices that’ll be updated to Android 6.0. Motorola isn’t committing to a release timeframe for any of these updates, saying only that it’ll “work fast but won’t push the upgrades out until we know they’re ready.” Here are the phones that Motorola plans to update:
Motorola has also detailed what will be in its Marshmallow updates. For example, Motorola plans to remove Moto Assist in Android 6.0 because the main OS already includes similar features, like Do Not Disturb. Additionally, Motorola Migrate will be yanked because of Android 6.0’s data backup features, as will the Chrome extension for Motorola Connect, which Motorola feels is no longer needed because many consumers have moved from SMS to other messaging services.
One of the things that’s helped make Motorola’s Moto phones so popular in recent years is the stripped down OS that its devices run. They’re basically running vanilla Android with a few Motorola features added on that many feel really enhance the OS. What’s nice is that Motorola recognizes that Android 6.0 includes native versions of some of its special features, but rather than leave duplicates in there, it’ll remove them.
While Motorola isn’t saying exactly when it’ll begin pushing Marshmallow updates, it’s been pretty fast with its updates in the past. Here’s to hoping that that continues with Android 6.0.
