After first popping up on our radar six months ago, the privacy-centric Blackphone 2 is now available for purchase.
The Blackphone 2 can be bought directly from Silent Circle, the company behind the phone, for $799.00 unlocked. In terms of specs, the Blackphone 2 offers a 5.5-inch 1920x1080 display covered with Gorilla Glass 3, an octa-core Snapdragon 615 processor, 3GB of RAM, 4G LTE connectivity, and a 3060mAh battery with Quick Charge 2.0 support. Included is 32GB of storage with a microSD slot for added storage. And for capturing photos, the Blackphone 2 offers a 13-megapixel rear camera with a 5-megapixel front shooter.
Of course, the main draw of the Blackphone 2 is its software. The device runs Silent OS, a customized version of Android. Silent OS is focused on security and privacy, offering features like a Security Center that’ll let you tweak app permissions to your liking. There’s also Spaces, which offers separate, secure environments for your work and personal data. The Blackphone 2 supports Android For Work as well, which is Google’s enterprise service that separates work and personal apps and lets your company control the work-related content on your device.
The Blackphone 2 looks like a nice enough device and has a respectable set of features, but $799 places it above many flagship smartphones that are now available. Of course, the Blackphone 2 is designed for folks that take their security extremely seriously, as lots of people are probably content with trusting whatever security Apple and Google build into their phones. But if you want a phone that takes things a step further in terms of security and you’re able to pony up full price for an unlocked phone, the Blackphone 2 is now an option.
