Google’s monthly Android distribution reports are typically released within the first few days of the month, but for September, El Goog decided to take a bit more time with its stats. But now the numbers are finally in.
These numbers are the result of Google collecting data on devices running Android 2.2 and up that access the Google Play app during the 7-day period ending on September 7. During that period, Android Lollipop was on 21 percent of devices, which is up from 18.1 percent in August. Breaking Lollipop down, Android 5.1 was on 5.1 percent of devices while 5.0 was present on 15.9 percent of products.
Android 4.4 KitKat accounted for 39.2 percent of devices during the survey period, while Android Jelly Bean finished at 31.8 percent. Those numbers are down from 39.3 percent and 33.6 percent, respectively. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich was present on 3.7 percent of devices during the 7-day period, which is slightly down from the 4.1 percent share it had in August.
Rounding out the numbers is Android 2.3 Gingerbread at 4.1 percent and Android 2.2 Froyo with 0.2 percent. Both of those numbers are down from last month, when Gingerbread claimed 4.6 percent of devices and Froyo was on 0.2 percent of hardware.
Since Android 6.0 Marshmallow won’t roll out to the public until this fall, it’s no surprise to not see it on this list. As for what is on the list, it’s nice to see Lollipop continue to grow, with that version of the OS now present on more than one-fifth of all Android devices.
