The iPhone 6s hasn’t yet been announced — it’s expected to be made official later this week — but the rumor mill has already started cranking about claims about the iPhone 7.
KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has offered accurate information about unannounced Apple products in the past, says that Apple could make the iPhone 7 somewhere between 6.0mm and 6.5mm thick. To compare, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are 6.9mm and 7.1mm thick. The recently-updated iPod touch is 6.1mm thick, so it’s possible that the iPhone 7 could be as thin as that new iPod.
Apple’s non-S iPhone models are typically the ones that carry major redesigns, and Apple has shown in the past that thinness is an important feature of its devices. For example, the iPhone 6 product page touts the device as “Larger, yet dramatically thinner,” then talks up its thinness once again just a little bit further down the page. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Apple offer an iPhone 7 that’s thinner than the iPhone 6, and considering that the jump from the iPhone 5 to the iPhone 6 also included a decrease in thickness from 7.6mm to 6.9mm, a sub-6.5mm iPhone 7 certainly sounds plausible.
