Patches for Android’s Stagefright patch began rolling out to several devices this week, including those from Google and Samsung. Now Motorola has announced its plans for issuing patches to its devices.
Motorola says that the new Moto X Style/Pure Edition and the Moto X Play will have the patch built in, as will most Moto G (3rd Gen.) units. However, Motorola does say that some initial shipments of the Moto G (3rd Gen.) do not have the patch included. Those devices will be updated “soon.”
For its other devices, Motorola plans to start handing its updates over to carrier partners starting on August 10. Moto explains that it’s working with the carriers to get the update out as quickly as possible, but there’s no timeframe yet on when these updates will actually start going out. Here are the phones that Motorola plans to issue Stagefright patches for:
In the mean time, Motorola has given instructions on how to disable auto-downloading of MMS messages to protect yourself from Stagefright until your device is updated. You can find instructions for Messaging, Hangouts, Verizon Message+, https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/prod_answer_detail/a_id/106654Whatsapp Messenger, and Handcart Next SMS at this link.
It’s good that Motorola is sharing this information related to the Stagefright patch and its plans for issuing updates to its devices. Samsung has already started issuing updates for several of its carrier-branded phones, though, so hopefully Motorola’s devices begin getting updates shortly after Moto gives them to the carriers on August 10.
