When the Sony Xperia Z4 made its debut earlier this year, most folks were a little underwhelmed by the device because it was supposed to be a successor to the Z3, but it didn’t offer much outside of a small design refresh and a couple of spec updates. Now a leak has shown that the Xperia Z5 could offer a more notable new feature.
Images that may show the Sony Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact have leaked out, and both devices have what appear to be fingerprint readers. The photos, shared by Vizileaks, show two phones that look like Sony Android devices running Lollipop. However, the traditionally round power button on the side of the phones has been elongated, and the top image shows what appears to be fingerprint setup screens on the two Sony phones that are on either side of an iPhone 6.
The second leaked image offers a closer look at the elongated power button and fingerprint reader on both phones. We can also see that the volume rockers on both phones have moved closer to the bottom of the phone, landing smack dab in-between the power button and the dedicated camera key.
It’s tough to tell what kind of other design changes might be made to the Xperia Z5 and Z5 Compact in these dim photos, but they don’t appear to be too different from past models. If Sony includes a fingerprint reader and upgrades some of the Z5’s other specs, like upping it to 4GB of RAM and maybe increasing its screen resolution to 2560x1440, folks might be more interested in it than they are in the Z4. And while the Z5 Compact might not be quite as high-end, past Compact phones have been praised for their small size, and so fans of phones that are easily used one-handed will be happy to see the Z5 Compact in this leak.
