Selfies are all the range with the young’uns, and as a result, we’ve seen a lot of phone makers beefing up the front-facing cameras on their smartphones lately. Today Samsung’s done just that by adding a feature to two of its new phones that we haven’t seen on any other Galaxy phone to date.
The Samsung Galaxy J7 and J5 have been revealed in China, and one of their most notable features is that they’ve got an LED flash for the front-facing camera. That’s the first time we’ve seen Samsung offer a Galaxy smartphone with a front LED flash, which surely proves that selfies are a big deal.
In addition to the LED flash, the Galaxy J7 and J5 both have 5-megapixel cameras that offer 85 degree wide angle lenses. And if that’s not quite wide enough to fit your whole group into a selfie, there appears to be a sort of panorama mode that’ll let you take 120 degree photos.
Of course, the Galaxy J7 and J5 also have rear cameras. Those are 13-megapixel shooters with f/1.9 apertures adn their own LED flashes.
When it comes to their non-camera features, the Galaxy J7 and J5 are a couple of mid-range phones. The Galaxy J7’s got a 5.5-inch 1280x720 display, octa-core Snapdragon 615 processor, 16GB of storage, a microSD slot, dual SIM slots, and a 3000mAh battery. Meanwhile, the Galaxy J5 has a 5-inch 1280x720 screen, quad-core Snapdragon 410 chipset, 16GB of storage, microSD slot, dual SIM slots, and a 2600mAh battery.
Both the Galaxy J7 and J5 will launch in China with Android 5.1 in tow. The larger J7 will cost 1,798 CNY ($289 USD), while the J5 will set buyers back 1,398 CNY ($225 USD).
A front-facing camera flash likely isn’t going to be a huge deal to folks that aren’t really into taking selfies, but it’s nice that Samsung finally offering a couple of phones with that feature for anyone that does like capturing self portraits. What will be interesting is seeing how many future Galaxy devices we see with a front-facing flash.
