OnePlus talks Android 5.1 update plans for the OnePlus One

If you’ve already got a OnePlus One or are thinking about picking one up after its permanent price cut, you’re probably wondering when its Android 5.1 update will arrive. Today OnePlus spilled some details on that very topic.

OnePlus says that Cyanogen OS 12.1, which will include Android 5.1, is currently undergoing factory testing and Google certification and that it’ll be available “soon.”

When it comes to OnePlus’s own OxygenOS, the news isn’t as good. OnePlus explains that it’s currently hard at work on the OxygenOS release for the OnePlus 2 and that, because it’s a small team, it needs to focus on what it’s currently working on. As a result, the OxygenOS flavor or Android 5.1 won’t be available until after the OnePlus 2 release, which is expected in Q3 2015. OnePlus says that it plans to pick up the pace of its updates after the OnePlus 2’s release since that’ll be the device’s official OS.

So that’s the Android 5.1 situation on the OnePlus One. Obviously it’s kind of a bummer that the OxygenOS version of Android 5.1 is still a few months out, but because the OnePlus One can also run Cyanogen OS, any OPO users that are already running Cyanogen OS or are comfortable flashing it won’t have to wait several months to get Android 5.1 on their phone.
