Sony hasn’t made any announcements about a follow-up to 2014’s SmartBand fitness tracker, but a Google Play app listing has revealed that such a device is coming.
A new SmartBand 2 app has been published to Google Play by Sony. The description for the app explains that it’s the companion to the SmartBand 2 SWR12, a band that’ll track your activity and sleep using pulse and HRV. The device also has a smart wakeup feature that’ll help give you a “smooth wake up” in the morning. And like many other smart things that you strap to your wrist, the SmartBand 2 can notify you of incoming alerts on your smartphone, including phone calls or social media posts.
As for the design of the SmartBand 2, it looks like a thin, white watch band without the actual watch. The inside is home to what looks to be a heart rate sensor.
It’s also worth noting that the SmartBand 2 requires an Android phone running 4.4 KitKat or higher, but it doesn’t require you to own a Sony smartphone. Sony does note, though, that “functionality may not be optimal” when you use it with non-Sony phones.
So yeah, it looks like Sony is going to announce a SmartBand 2 soon. Exactly when it’ll launch and how much it’ll cost isn’t mentioned in this SmartBand 2 app listing, but since it’s not a full-on smartwatch with a big ol’ screen, I don’t expect that it’ll be too pricey. When Sony actually announces its new SmartBand 2, I’ll be sure to fill you in on that availability info.
