Google today launched the Android M Developer Preview, allowing owners of select Nexus devices the opportunity to get an early taste of the next major Android update. Now it’s been revealed that those folks that decided to pull the Android M trigger will get updated versions on a monthly basis.
On a Program Overview page for the Android M preview, Google says that it’ll deliver updates over the air to devices running the preview software. Google expects to push updates on approximately once a month until Android M is released to the public in Q3 2015. According to the Program Overview page, Google aims to release an update to Preview 2 in late June or early July, then to Preview 3 in late July, and then the final Android SDK will arrive “shortly before the public release during Q3 2015.” Google’s Dan Burke confirmed the approximate once-per-month update plans.
Google intends to deliver these updates over the air to ensure that developers can easily keep their Android M preview devices up-to-date. However, Google will also offer system images that you can flash manually.
It’s no surprise that Google plans to tweak and improve Android M before its release. What’s good to hear is that Google is planning to push monthly updates out to folks in the Developer Preview, because that means any devs in the program will be able to constantly tweak their app to make sure it plays nicely with M when it launches to the public. And for anyone that’s in the Developer Preview just because they like to play with shiny new things, well, they’ll get a steady stream of shiny new things to play with in the coming months.
