After starting out as a closed beta app last month, Meerkat today officially opened up to all Android users.
Meerkat is now available from Google Play, supporting devices on Android 4.2 and up. The app lets you send your stream alerts to Twitter and your viewers can comment on the stream using Twitter as well. Unlike Periscope, your stream won’t be available on Meerkat once it’s done, though you can save it locally if you’d like.
While livestreaming apps are nothing new, streaming video from your phone has been blowing up lately thanks to apps like Meerkat and Periscope. Up until now, Android users have been left out of the livestreaming fun, but now fans of Google’s green robot and stream themselves as well. Twitter has said that an Android version of Periscope is in the works and coming “soon.”
If you download Meerkat for Android, be sure to share your first impressions with us!
