Apple already has an interest in getting inside vehicles with CarPlay, but apparently the company’s may not be content with just being inside cars.
According to the Wall Street Journal’s infamous “people familiar with the matter,” Apple has hundreds of employees working on an Apple-branded vehicle. The car is electric, codenamed “Titan,” and reportedly “resembles a minivan.” Apple CEO Tim Cook is said to have approved the car project nearly one year ago.
While it’s possible that an Apple car may never actually see release, the sources of today’s report say that the size of the team working on the car as well as the status of some of the people working on it suggest that Apple is serious about the effort. For example, VP Steve Zadesky is reportedly leading the group, and Zadesky previously helped lead the Apple teams that created the iPod and iPhone.
It sounds kind of crazy to think that Apple would release a car, but it’s possible that the Cupertino firm is exploring other markets in which it could enter. It’s already doing well in smartphones, and the iPad seems to be doing about as well as it ever will. And while it obviously would be pretty expensive for Apple to get into the car game, Tim Cook and Co. have a lot of cash in their battle chest.
